What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term that refers to conditions that cause mild to severe inflammation, stiffness, swelling, and limited mobility in the joints. A joint is any point where two bones meet, which allows for movement and mobility.

There are 360 joints in the body, and arthritis may impact any of them, causing symptoms that can result in chronic:

  • Knee pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Hand and feet pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Pelvic pain

For many, arthritis worsens with age. Those at highest risk for developing arthritis include those who have experienced joint injury in the past, who have a family history of arthritis, and who are obese. The team at Interventional Spine and Pain Center has experience and extensive knowledge about treating many forms of arthritis using a holistic, regenerative approach.

What are some forms of arthritis?

There are as many as 200 types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of arthritis. This condition is the result of the breakdown of tissues between joints, which causes bones to rub against each other. Osteoarthritis causes joint damage and chronic pain.

Other forms of arthritis include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Sacroiliitis
  • Spinal arthritis

These forms of arthritis can cause changes to your joints and break down the tissues and bones of the joint. Arthritis may cause deformity and loss of mobility of the joint, if not treated.
